Extreme weather, school logbooks and social vulnerability: The Outer Hebrides, Scotland, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries

This paper demonstrates the value of school logbooks, an unusual and hitherto underused archival source, to field historical geographies weather climate. It examines logbooks for schools across Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles, off west coast mainland Scotland, ranging from late nineteenth century until early twentieth century. The had numerous varied impacts on everyday life islands was frequently recorded in logbooks. shows that islanders were especially vulnerable extreme events – typically strong winds, heavy rain, storms snow which affected children's attendance, health well-being. is argued vulnerability reflected wider social islands' crofting communities.
